«Meals and Cooking (Eating out in English-speaking countries and Ukraine)» in dialogical and monological forms of speech, to form and develop
language competence in speaking, writing; to develop listening skills; to
improve reading technique (to oneself and aloud).
Educational: to form an idea about traditional eating out
places in Ukraine and English-speaking countries; to develop communication
skills; to broaden students’ knowledge on topic «Meals and Cooking (Eating out in English-speaking countries and Ukraine)».
Sociocultural: to broaden students’ horizons; to acquaint
them with the part of English-speaking countries’ everyday life, with eating
out places in particular.
Developmental: to develop skills which will help students use
new material in real-life situations; ability to express oneself logically; to
develop dialogical and monological forms of speech; to train thinking,
imagination and memory.
Professional: to learn how to evaluate students according to
the richness of content, creativity, pronunciation, the use of grammar, fluency
in a foreign language.
Goals of the
activity: to form and develop
language competence writing; to learn how to write a review; to acquaint students with surveys and blogs.
1) At the beginning of the lesson students answer the questions concerning going out places.
2) In the main part of the lesson there is a presentation of the new material (new words which are related to the topic), which is followed by the exercise, where students need to use these new words. The next part of the lesson is training in speaking (answer the questions, using the expressions from the Useful language box). In the reading and writing section students read and translate some reviews written about a variety of restaurants in London, and write down all the unknown words and phrases. The next is the activity itself.
Description of the activity:
Answer the questions of the survey. You have a list of famous eating out places in
Mykolayiv. Choose one restaurant and write a short review about it, tell about
the pros and cons of the restaurant and evaluate it:

This activity is followed by writing one: students read and fill in the gaps with suitable words. After that they listen to the conversation at a casual restaurant and fill in the gaps (Listening). The last tast is to act out a dialogue, using the words and phrases on the topic «Meals and Cooking (Eating out in English-speaking countries and Ukraine)», which were presented during the lesson.
3) The end of the lesson. Home Task - Project: Open a new restaurant! Work in groups of 3-5. Imagine you are going to open your own restaurant. Discuss and decide on the following aspects:
- Who are your target consumers?
- What cuisine will you serve?
- Will you have any specialties, or a daily menu,
or takeaway?
- What type of atmosphere will you try to
generate? How?
- Will there be any entertainment?
- What decor will you have?
- Where will your restaurant be located?
- How will you advertise?
- What prices will you charge?
- What are you going to
call your restaurant?
Additional comments: This activity (Survey) will be checked and analyzed by the teacher and the results of this activity (discussion and evaluation) will be presented during the next lesson.
